The legendary American liner SS United States is to be scuttled off the coast of Florida to turn it into the world's largest artificial reef, reports Associated Press.
The operation is planned for 12 November in the Gulf of Mexico, approximately 41 km south-west of the city of Destin. The timing may change depending on weather conditions.
The ship is about 300 metres long. In 1952, on its maiden transatlantic voyage, SS United States set a speed record for crossing the Atlantic that remains unbeaten to this day. During its years of service, the liner carried presidents, celebrities and other well-known passengers.

After several decades laid up and unsuccessful attempts to preserve the ship, it was acquired in 2024 by Okaloosa County in Florida. Since March 2025, the liner has been in the city of Mobile, Alabama, where it was being prepared for scuttling. Before sending it to the seabed, specialists removed materials that could have harmed the environment.
In future, the liner's hull is to become a habitat for fish and other marine organisms. The authorities also hope to attract divers and tourists to it, which is expected to bring additional income to local businesses.
Some parts of the ship, including its funnels, will be preserved for a future museum dedicated to the history of SS United States.
